How to backup your applications?

Using the Aptik tool you can take applications backup by applying the following steps:

• Launch a Terminal Window using Ctrl + Alt + T

• For installing Aptik use the following commands:

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa: teejee2008 / ppa

Press Enter key and then type the following command.

sudo apt-get update

Press Enter key and then type the following command.

Sudo apt-get install timeshift

• Type the password and press Enter

• Now to quit the Terminal Window type 'Exit' and press Enter or hit the X button

• In the Search box type 'TimeShift,' as soon as the icon appears, click to launch the application

• Enter your Password in the dialog box and click 'OK.'

The TimeShift window appears with the option of 'Backup Device.' You can choose a partition or a drive that you want to backup. You will understand about the number of snapshots required within the status bar. When a snapshot is taken, it is stored in the related device. If you want to take a backup of the device, then use the option of 'Backup.'

When the snapshot is created, you will get details that include name, version, date and time of the system. You will be able to see the space available in the status bar along with the detail of the last snapshot taken.

Identifying various options in snapshot

When you go to the 'Backup Device' you can see a list of the path of the snapshots related to the specific device.

The 'timeshift' directory is all about the snapshots that you have taken using TimeShift. It includes scheduled snapshots that are defined by the user.

The manual snapshots are stored in the snapshots folder. You should copy the folder to a USB drive or a cloud or network drive. The application is compatible with Google Drive and Dropbox. The Browse button will help you check out the contents of the snapshot. The directory launches in File Manager and all the files from the system get listed.

You can choose to remove snapshots by creating automatic remove option available in 'Settings.'

To schedule snapshots adjust the slider to ON / OFF within 'Scheduled Snapshots.'

Now you need to checkmark against 'Enable.'

The 'Auto-Remove' allows you to remove older snapshots to make space for new snapshots. You can set a limit to remove snapshots. The time and the amount can be entered for a smooth process.

In the 'Advanced' tab, you can exclude directories, files, and directory contents.
For restoring a snapshot launch TimeShift-> select the specific shot and Restore.
The 'Target' tab is used to specify the device for restoring your snapshots. You can mention the device where you need to restore it. Select the option of 'Device for Bootloader Installation and Device for Restoring Snapshots.'

To select the applications you need to use the 'Exclude.' The applications selected in the tab will appear in the current settings.

The 'Advanced' tab helps you in removing contents from the restored system.

The TimeShift is an amazing tool to restore files; it comes handy for System Restore. You need not require any other software or application as it offers numerous features and functionality. It is easy to use, and you can utilize it to make custom settings for storing files and documents. It is one of the best when it comes to restoring files for when you reinstall your Linux.
