Web development can be split into many areas and a typical and basic web development hierarchy might consist of Ajax, Flash, JavaScript, Microsoft Silverlight, and, HTML and CSS3.

The first area to discuss is the Ajax. It is used to create an interactive web application which is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side. It can retrieve data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. The techniques of this type have led to an increase in interactive or dynamic interfaces on web pages. Using the XMLHttpRequest object, data is usually retrieved. The use of XML is not actually required, nor do the requests need to be asynchronous despite the name.

Ajax is a group of technologies like DHTML and LAMP. A combination of HTML and CSS to mark up and style information is used by Ajax. With the use of the JavaScript, DOM is accessed to dynamically display the information presented. It also allowed the user to interact with the information. A method for exchanging data asynchronously between browser and server to avoid full page reloads is provided by the JavaScript and the XMLHttpRequest.

Flash Adobe Flash Player adds animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages. Advertisements and games are presented by the use of Flash. It has been positioned as a tool for Rich Internet Applications or RIAs. To provide animation of text, drawings, and still images, Flash manipulates vector and raster graphics. The Flash supports bidirectional streaming of audio and video, and it can capture user input via mouse, keyboard, microphone, and camera. An Object-oriented language called ActionScript is contained in Flash.

JavaScript is formerly called ECMAScript and it is a ubiquitous client side platform for creating and delivering rich Web applications that can also run across a wide variety of devices. It is typically used to enable programmatic access to computational objects within a host environment. The JavaScript is primarily used in the form of client-side JavaScript, implemented as part of a web browser in order to provide enhanced user interfaces and dynamic websites. It is significant in its use in applications outside web pages.

Microsoft Silverlight integrates multimedia, graphics animation and interactivity into a single runtime environment. The later versions brought additional interactivity features and support for CLI languages and development tools. The features are also similar to the Adobe Flash. Multiple web browsers used on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating system are compatible with Microsoft Silverlight. It provides a retained mode graphics system similar to Windows Presentation Foundation.

HTML5 and CSS3 are the latest proposed standard combined with the latest proposed standard for CSS natively supports much of the client functionality provided by other frameworks such as Flash and Silverlight.
